Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grown-ups to make us mind.  He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter’s idea of fun is sharper than a pirate’s sword.  Because it’s never been all fun and games on the island.  Our neighbors are pirates and monsters.  Our toys are knife and stick and rock-the kinds of playthings that bite.

My thoughts

This story is definitely going in my top 5 reads of 2017.  I’m not a big fan of Peter Pan’s story but I do like a great Pirate story and this story was fantastic one that you need to read.  I have to say I loved Jamie later known as Captain Hook and this story was perfection!  I loved getting the story from Jamie’s perspective Christina Henry did an amazing job with this retelling and there’s so much going on that is so good and the characters I couldn’t help but loved them all even though there was a lot of violence I still loved this book.

Once I was young, and forever and always, until I wasn’t.  Once I loved a boy called Peter Pan.

This story is about Jamie (Captain Hook) Peter Pan’s first boy to entered the Never-Never Land, Peter’s right hand boy the one that looked over all the other boys, the one closest to Peter Pan.  Jamie’s role in the island was that of a father figure to all the boys that Peter brought in to the island.  After a while Peter Pan’s childish irresponsible behavior weighed heavily on Jamie, since he was the one who took the role to look out for all the lost boys he was the one who had to bury them all when they died.  And this is where the violence and the gruesome fights to death come into play.  This book has some dark scene but I still loved to see how it all played out.

Peter was for fun, for play, for adventures.  Me, I kept his playmates alive-even when he didn’t want them anymore. 

I love seeing the darker side of Peter Pan, the boy that never grew old and threw tantrums when he didn’t get his way.  Like I said before I’m not a huge fan of Peter Pan, I always found the story to be a little creepy to be honest, and this retelling showing how Jamie (Captain Hook) wasn’t always the villain they made him out to be was fantastic.  I loved this story and the way Jamie expressed his love for Peter Pan until Jamie realized that Peter was keeping secrets from him.

I didn’t know Peter anymore, not the way I used to.  We used to share everything.  Peter would never leave me out of an adventure

This was a great twist to the story with amazing characters and an amazing world-building.  We get to know how these boys tried to survived in the island among themselves.  We get some very amazing creatures like mermaids, the many-eyed monsters, sharks and lets not forget the pirates.  There is also some type of attraction between two of the boys but no romance.

It was not natural for boys to stay boys forever.  We were supposed to grow up, and have boys of our own, and teach them how to be men. 

Overall, a PERFECT retelling of Captain Hook with lots of interesting twists, amazing characters.  A bit dark and gruesome at times but AMAZING READ!  If you like Peter Pan and Captain Hook stories then this one is one you won’t want to miss.   I LOVED IT!!! Now, I will be picking up more of Christina Henry’s books I hear Alice was really good.

This isn’t a wonderful place for boys to play and have adventures and stay young for always.  It’s a killing place, and we’re just soldiers in Peter’s war
