Synopsis
Boys in the Valley” is a gripping tale set at the turn of the century in a remote Pennsylvania valley where St. Vincent’s Orphanage for Boys offers sanctuary to thirty young souls. Peter Barlow, once orphaned by a brutal murder, finds solace, camaraderie, and purpose within the orphanage’s walls. However, their peaceful existence is shattered when a stormy night ushers in a group of mysterious men, one of whom bears sinister symbols etched into his wounded flesh. His death unleashes an ancient malevolence that spreads like an insidious disease, corrupting both St. Vincent’s and its vulnerable inhabitants. The boys, once united, begin to change, forming factions and taking sides, while ominous deaths haunt the valley. Now, Peter and his closest allies must confront their own harrowing choices, aware that their lives and, perhaps, their eternal souls hang in the balance as they grapple with a malevolent force threatening to consume them all.
My thoughts
This book was an absolute delight. It’s a spooky, well-crafted story that transports you into its eerie world while also telling a gripping coming-of-age tale. If you love horror or just want a story that gives you chills, this is a must-read. The story is set in a Catholic-run orphanage, but it takes a unique turn as it becomes a battle against demonic possession. It’s not your typical good versus evil; the demons target many children. While it has elements of classics like “Lord of the Flies” and “The Exorcist,” it has its own unique twist.
Surprisingly, this horror story is character-driven. It shows you the tough life of orphans in the early 1900s. The characters are well-developed, and you can’t help but root for them as they face the hidden evil. The story keeps you hooked from beginning to end, and it’s a quick, satisfying read. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author. If you like historical fiction mixed with horror and a bit of gore, give “Boys in the Valley” a try.
This book explores the internal struggles of its characters, as they try to understand themselves. It delves into various themes, from trauma and depression to violence and the distinction between faith and religion. Despite its complexity, it’s an easy and fast-paced read that keeps you engaged.
