Goodreads synopsis:
Miss Katherine Danvers is a desperate wallflower. Her family is on the brink of financial ruin, and it is up her to save her mother and sisters from a life of indignities. So she transforms herself into the incomparable Kitty Danvers, the fiancée of the enigmatic and reclusive Alexander Masters, Duke of Thornton—once dubbed the mad, bad, and dangerous catch of the Season.
Ten years ago, society and the woman Alexander Masters loved called him a monster, after a tragic accident left him scarred and confined to a wheelchair. His heart exists in cold, lonely exile, until he learns he has a fiancée—a deceptive, clever, and utterly intriguing woman he’s never met. Miss Danvers will now learn the consequences of engaging herself to the beast, for Alexander is determined to make her his. Soon, they are involved in a chase, a clash of wills, and though he once vowed to never love again, he burns for the enchanting Miss Danvers. And denying his heart may cost him an exquisite love that happens only once in a lifetime.
My thoughts:
I absolutely loved this book, and after reading it I couldn’t stop thinking about. Katherine at 23 years of age knows that yet another season has passed without a marriage proposal and she knows she needs to do something to help the family avoid a financial disaster so she decides to start a rumor, this rumor is her supposed engagement to Alexander Masters the Duke of Thornton, he’s said to be mad and dangerous.
Katherine knows that if the duke ever hears of the rumors she will have to pay dearly but she is desperate and is willing to sacrifice her future for her family. So, she sets her plans in motion and things starts to happen for her and the family, she is being careful and keeping track of all the expenses in order to someday maybe if she gets caught she can pay it all back. Things are really starting to look up for her and the sisters, everyone in town wants to know about Katherine and the duke and the supposed love story on how Kathering and the Duke became engaged she is in all the papers and she is all everyone keeps talking about.
Then here comes Alexander Masters, he hasn’t been seen in years. This is due to a tragic accident he had that left him scarred, and not able to walk he uses a wheelchair most of the time. Due to this unfortunate event, he secluded himself from everyone after being called a monster by his ex fiance and other people around. He lost all hope of ever having a loving family or someone to be by his side. Then one day Alexander finds out about the rumors and want to know everything about Katherine so he requests that all the newspapers are brought to him daily, and every time he reads the papers he becomes more and more intrigued by Katherine and decides he needs to meet her. And this is where the story starts to pick up. I don’t want to spoil it for you so I’ll stop here, but if you love banter and angsty romance you will definitely enjoy this story. Also, this is supposed to be a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I did notice some similarities but I also thought of Pride and Prejudice while reading the story.
I absolutely loved them both Katherine was smart and funny . Alexander, sometimes too hard on himself yet sensitive at times I absolutely loved him, as I was reading I was hoping he got a happy ending, but I have to say he annoyed me at times.
One thing I didn’t like about the story was how it slow down a bit and I found it to be a bit repetitive when Alexander kept pushing Katherine back, I mean the guy was told he was never going to walk again and that he is believed to be impotent and I can see why he acted the way he did but after a couple of times enough with the bs.
Overall, I really loved the story and really enjoyed the characters, the banter and the chemistry and I will continue on with the series.
Thank you to netgalley, author and publisher for the earc all thoughts are my own.
