Wake of Vultures, Book #1 of The Shadow – 4.5 stars
Book synopsis
Nettie Lonesome made a leap -not knowing what she’d become. But now her destiny as the Shadow is calling.
A powerful alchemist is leaving a trail of death across the prairie. And Nettie must face the ultimate challenge: side with her friends and the badge on her chest or take off alone on a dangerous mission that is pulling her inexorably toward the fight of her life.
When it comes to monsters and men, the world isn’t black and white. What good are two wings and a gun when your enemy can command a conspiracy of ravens?
My thoughts
This is the sequel to Wake of Vultures, which follow sNettie Lonesome a mixed-race slave girl half African-American and half Native-American. This book picks up right where the Wake of Vultures ended and if you haven’t read that book yet I say thread carefully since this is the second book in the series and will have some spoilers.
Nettie Lonesome is now a shapeshifter The Shadow a monster that kills other monsters. In this book Nettie is no longer herself and there’s no more of he/she kind of talk when referring to herself, He is now Rhett a ranger dealing with his/her sexuality when we meet Earl O’Bannon another shapeshifter-a donkey (LOL), who had recently escaped the evil Mr. Trevisian.
Rhett with the help of some old friends and Earl the donkey shifter go on to stop the evil Mr. Trevisian who uses his magic to get what he wants.
This is a paranormal Western story that not only has monsters and magic but it is also about dealing with your own sexuality and accepting who you are regardless of what others think or feel about you.
Overall, this was a great sequel and I can’t wait to pick up Malice of Crows (The Shadow #3)
Thank you to the author and Orbit books for providing me with a copy, in exchange for a review. ALL OPINIONS ARE MY OWN.
